Holly Odell - Violin and Fiddle Lessons

Holly Odell is taking on new students for private lessons, teaching violin, viola, fiddle, mandolin and guitar in the Belmont/Green Hills area. Holly Odell specializes in teaching student the music they want to learn “I'm very open to what the students likes to play. I write out the music to songs they want to learn to play, providing them with the best technique to accomplish their goals.”

“I specialize in coaching string musicians for orchestra auditions. I have played under so many great conductors that I know what style and approach the conductor wants to hear and can help the student have the best possible chance of acing the audition.”

These past years fifteen years Holly Odell has played violin with the Memphis Symphony, Evansville Philharmonic, Huntsville Symphony and Chattanooga Symphony, and toured Taiwan with the Hollywood Symphonic Orchestra. She was a guest fiddle soloist with John Hartford's Steam Boat Band and the Nashville Symphony. During these years Holly has performed under many great Conductors such as Joseph Silverstein, Jame Dixon, Louis Lane, Carlos Miguel Prieto, Shinak Hahn, Alfred Salvia, and Kenneth Schermerhorn. She has performed as a guest artist at the Humbolt University in East Berlin demonstrating a Fiddle Master Class Series. She studied with great teachers such as Professor Allen Ohmes in Iowa City, Iowa, Doll Werner, 3rd Chair violinist with the East Berlin Symphony in East Berlin, and Ted Madsen in Nashville Tennessee. “I was so lucky to study under these brilliant violinists who taught me so much about their own personal style and technique. I began by studying Suzuki and other violin methods under Doris Preucil, and Candace Wiebener. At age 16, I got my first big break and was taken on by Professor Allen Ohmes at the University of Iowa.

Some of my most memorable professional performances have been with violinists Joshua Bell, Eugene Fordor, and Patrick Rafferty, celloist Yo Yo Ma, soprano Kathleen Battle, Art Garfunkel, and Three Dog Night. An upcoming highlight to be added this list is a scheduled appearance with banjo player Bela Fleck and the Huntsville Symphony performing his First Banjo Concerto. “I'm excited about learning the 1st violin part for this new symphonic work. This challenging music will really get a player in shape and shake off any dust from a conductor's wand!”

In addition to her symphonic work, Holly Odell has traveled all over the world performing with a wide variety of artists in many different styles of music. One of her most rewarding touring jobs is with guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Øystein Sunde. Working with Sunde introduced Holly to a wealth of musical opportunities in the Europe and beyond.

My other great love is traditional fiddle music. I teach this as well as classical music. “There are so many incredible musicians in the “fiddle” world: Kenny Baker, Bobby Hicks, Vassar Clements, Mark O'Connor, Randy Howard, and John Hartford. They are amazing and I have been privileged to know them as friends as well as mentors and learn their techniques. I have toured and seen so much of the world all because of this instrument. I have seen more of Norway then a average native Norwegian Playing Bach in West/East Berlin and watching the wall come down was a true historical event for me too. Music has taken me on USO tours playing in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Okinawa, Hawaii, Italy, Holland, North Ireland, Scotland, England, Turkey, the Middle East and Germany. How many people get to say that?”
